Air pollution levels in London are a disgrace, and we need urgent action to tackle the problem. It is estimated that toxic air contributes to over 40,000 premature deaths a year.
TfL are bringing forward an Ultra-Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) for Central London in 2019. This will see all vehicles that do not meet emissions standards incurring a daily charge for driving within that zone.
TfL is now consulting on extending the ULEZ up to but not including the North and South Circulars by October 2021.
The problem with this is that as the proposals stand, Richmond Borough will be partially covered by the new zone and Kingston will be excluded entirely. This will create a perverse incentive for more polluting vehicles to drive through our part of London and worsen our air quality.
I am pleased that Richmond Council is calling on the Mayor and TfL to bring forward the introduction of the ULEZ to 2020 and is pressing to ensure that it covers the whole of Greater London.
I am doing the same, and I strongly encourage you to have your say too. You can find more details about the consultation and have your say HERE
