The MP for Richmond Park and North Kingston joined fellow MPs in collecting a gifted tree from Extinction Rebellion on Wednesday 9th October. Zac met with representatives from Extinction Rebellion and discussed the importance of planting more trees across the UK and overseas. Watch the discussions here.
Gifting trees to MPs is part of the actions taking place by Extinction Rebellion to encourage planting more trees by creating a fledging forest with 1,000 potted native trees #ReforestEarth.
Earlier in the week, Zac, who is the Minister for Forests, answered questions in the Commons on the importance of the UK continuing to pursue an ambitious tree planting programme. In his statement, Zac stated:
“We do have an ambitious tree planting programme, but my view is that we need to step it up even further and we are certainly planning to do so. There will be, I can tell him, tantalizingly some announcements soon to that effect. But it is not just about planting trees, it is also about ecosystems and encouraging wildlife in all its forms.” To watch Zac’s Q&A in Parliament, please click here.
On collecting his tree, Zac said: “Thank you to Extinction Rebellion for my beautiful oak tree. Planting and protecting trees here and overseas on a much larger scale is a critically important part of tackling the environment and climate crisis. I look forward to planting this tree in a special place in my constituency.”
