Richmond Park and North Kingston MP Zac Goldsmith was amongst the MPs who spoke up to back the Government as it introduced legislation to Parliament to establish a target of the UK emitting net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Zac, who was one of the first MPs to call for the setting of such a target, spoke in the House of Commons and sought to allay concerns that “net zero” is a threat to jobs in the UK. Addressing Minister Chris Skidmore, he asked: “Does he agree that we have already seen the creation of 400,000 low-carbon jobs in this country, and that by leading the transition to a clean economy—which will happen whether we like it or not—there will be even more opportunities for job creation in the future?”
The Government target plan was backed by MPs of all parties and is now fixed in law.
Speaking afterwards, Zac said: “It’s brilliant that we’ve become the first major world economy to set a net zero carbon emissions target for 2050, but we now have to back up that ambition with real action. No doubt this will require huge changes to the way we live, but there are fantastic opportunities too, not least in cleaning up our power supply and creating thousands of new jobs in green energy.”
