Zac Goldsmith and Maddi Rogerson, Special Advisor to the Bezos Earth Fund secured an ambitious Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Indonesia to protect 15 million hectares of intact and enormously valuable natural forest.
Most of the forest is currently classified as ‘Production Forest’. The commitment is to
•legally recognise around 3.5 million hectares as customary (adat) forests and transfer it to indigenous communities.
•Establish new national parks in key biodiversity areas covering at least 2.5 million hectares.
•Convert around 9 million hectares of ‘productivity concessions’ into Conservation concessions’
